I did the chocolate thing last year, the usual flowers, also the teddy bear, and the usual cards, did the dinner; however, this year I am kind of stuck.
What are good valentine day gifts apart from the usual flowers?
I would say, dress up nicely, go to a fancy, romantic resteraunt. Maybe do the whole flowers, and candy, teddy bear thing, maybe go for a walk on the beach, if you%26#039;re near one, or write a romantic song, if you can sing. write, or play guitar.

Why is there a lot of people buying flowers, candy and other gifts for President%26#039;s day,?
Lol, i think they are buying it for Valentines day some people actually consider it a holiday, i don%26#039;t believe in those things because i feel like it%26#039;s the business (retail, reataurants, floral shops, etc.) that benefit from it.
Showing love and appreciation should be a daily thing.

tonight was my daughter%26#039;s preschool graduation and i got each of the two female teachers a gift certificate for a haircut at a high end salon in the neighborhood and a Thomas Kinkaid candle in a tin and everyone else got vases of flowers??? was this FOOLISH of me?

SUre people can hate the smell of flowers, but hey, who was supposed to guess that you hated that. No one. So you should have gone with flowers, or a restaurant gift certificate instead of the salon.
